Germany Women won their fourth successive European Championship title at the weekend as the UEFA Women's Euro 2005 tournament in north-west England came to its conclusion. The Germans beat Norway 3-1 in front of a crowd of over 21,000 in Blackburn, Lancashire. The win sealed Germany's dominance of European women's football. After clinching their third successive European Championship title in 2001, Germany were allowed to keep the trophy. A new trophy was unveiled for the 2005 tournament in Manchester in January and was handed to the chairman of the English Football Association, who hosted the 2005 event. The growing popularity and significance of the Women's Championship was reflected in both the media coverage and also the line-up of big name sponsors - these included Canon, Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, JVC, MasterCard and McDonald's. The English Northwest Regional Development Agency was also an official sponsor, reflecting the location of the event.
