Humanitarian group the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced the recipient of its Nansen Refugee Award for 2005. This award, named after the Norwegian polar explorer, was created in 1954. Formerly known as the Nansen Medal, the honour was renamed in 2001. The award seeks to recognise individuals and groups who excel in supporting refugee causes. The 2005 Award will be presented to Burundi charity worker Margeurite Barankitse on World Refugee Day (22 June) in Brussels. As well as the honour, and the award medal, she will also receive a $10,000 grant which can be donated to a refugee-related project of her choice.
